阅读是语言信息输入的重要手段，是学习语言的基本途径。丰富的英语阅读有助于学生开阔视野，增长见识，扩大词汇量，了解英语国家的社会和文化，变得博学聪慧并且热爱学习。同时，有效的英语阅读也会提高学生听说写等语言综合运用能力。纵观近十多年的英语高考试题，不难发现阅读理解试题占有最大的分数比例，可谓英语试题的重头戏。高考阅读理解题材多样，信息丰富，且选材多源于英美国家的图书，报刊杂志和网络媒体，英语文章原汁原味，地道纯正，具有鲜明的英语文化的特点。因此，英语教师仅依靠课本进行英语阅读教学是完全不够的，还应该合理安排时间，有策略地指导学生做课外阅读训练，以提高学生心智水平，扩大其阅读领域，发展阅读能力，使他们在高考时从容应对不同题材的文章。下面是笔者多年在高中英语课外阅读教学中的一些做法和体会。
1.选紧扣教材单元主题的阅读材料教学。
从高一开始，我就把《阅读训练》作为英语阅读教学的重点材料。此书中的英语文章与教材单元话题吻合，或为背景知识，或为深化主题。在每学习新单元之前，我要求学生自己阅读基础训练部分的A，B，C三篇文章并完成其后的选择题。这三篇文章是有关背景知识的，简短易懂，学生能快速高效地完成，为学习新单元奠定了基础。学完课文之后，我利用一节课让学生读能力提升部分的三篇文章，它们是对课文话题的拓展。学生利用二十五到三十分钟的时间读完并做练习。同时，我在黑板上按顺序写出重要的生词和短语，学生阅读时必须找出并能理解它们在语境中的意思。综合演练篇是《阅读训练》中最难的部分，是教材内容的延伸。我在教完了一个单元之后根据学生实际情况分层次布置阅读任务，并将回答问题和课文填空题布置成书面作业，这样既做了阅读又训练了学生的写作能力，并且加深了学生对教材内容的理解和记忆。
2.选短小精悍故事性强的阅读材料教学
要做好初高中英语衔接教学，让学生具备基本语法知识和分析句子能力，真正培养他们英语四会能力，笔者认为《新概念英语》是很好的选择。新生入学时，我就要求他们利用周末阅读《新概念英语》第二册，每个周末完成四课的学习任务。此书里的阅读课文篇幅短，故事性强，生词少且有中文注释，学生极易理解。读完之后，他们听录音，然后再跟读。之后，学生做词汇和句型练习，扩大词汇量，掌握重点句型和语法知识。这本书里最好的练习是SummaryWriting和Composition两部分，我要求学生把这两个练习做成书面作业，周一上交，我逐一检查，选出好的课文概括或小作文让学生在课堂上朗读并交流。经过一学期训练，学生词汇量明显增加，阅读能力有了提高，基本语法知识，句子分析也清楚了许多，这为以后的英语教学奠定了坚实的基础，增加了学生的学习兴趣和自信心，消除了一部分学生尤其是男学生对英语的恐惧心理。之后，我以同样方法鼓励学生继续利用周末和假期阅读《新概念英语》第三，第四册。
3.选优秀英美国家文学简写本进行课外阅读教学
高二假期时，我要求每个学生在假期选读至少一本英语文学简写本（即英汉对照本）。事先，我推荐一些优秀外国作品给他们，然后让他们自己去书店挑选感兴趣的读物。阅读之后，学生要用英语写出读后感或故事梗概，字数不限，开学时交上作业供教师检查。学生们都写出了自己对故事真实的.感受和理解以及从中受到的鼓舞和启发。一部分学生很有自己独到的见解和体会，同时在英语语言表达上能运用课本中学到的亮点词汇句型和语法知识，我给他们的读后感加注了评语之后张贴在墙上供学生们阅读欣赏或发在班群里分享。阅读简写本使学生接触到了原汁原味，纯正地道的英语语言，提高了他们对英语的领悟能力，了解了西方国家的社会文化，节日习俗，家庭生活和自我奋斗的人生价值观，并拓宽了学生的文化视野。
